A long time ago, The Nominatrix asked me what songs I’ve been listening to – a question that I got all sorts of excited about, because I love talking about music. So I started thinking right away about what songs I’m getting’ down with my bad self to and which ones I'd pick…and then promptly forgot all about them.
(You know how there are like, fridge magnets that say, Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most? I used to see them and laugh, not at all sympathetically. Then I had children and I started laughing, maniacally, to the point of tears at times because it’s true, goddammit, it’s true. Ou est MY MIND?)
Ahem.
So here it is almost a month later and I’m finally getting around to answering Joy’s question. Am I a good, timely blogger or what?
For starters, I’ve been listening to a lot of The Mix-Up, a very cool, all-instrumental album from one of my favourite bands EVAH, The Beastie Boys. Hard to say which songs I like the most; they're truly all good, but I repeat B For My Name and The Melee a lot. (For my birthday Dave got us tickets to see them this past weekend and ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod the show was fucking amazing. They played so many great tunes I didn't know what to do with myself.)
Other tunes I’ve been diggin’ lately:
Arcade Fire – No Cars Go I’d never heard of them until a few weeks ago when I heard this song on the radio and now I can't get enough of it. Definitely a band I'm going to have to hear more of.
Velvet Revolver – The Last Fight I was shocked when I found out the song I’d been singing under my breath is sung by former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland. I’m not a huge fan of his but there's something about this song that I like. Also – I had no idea the majority of Velvet Revolver used to be in Guns n’ Roses; good to see Slash is still alive and jammin’.
3’s & 7’s and I’m Designer – Queens of the Stone Age Even though Dave has been bugging me for years to give this band a serious listen, I just got interested in them following the release of their most recent album, Era Vulgaris, which is amazing. I get 3’s & 7’s stuck in my head all the time…it’s an offbeat yet very catchy tune.
Along the same vein, I love to turn Gardenia by Kyuss up really, really loud when I’m driving without the kids. I’d been listening to Kyuss for a while before I realized that many of them were the same guys behind Queens of the Stone Age. Like, duh.
Something I’ve never called myself is a Smashing Pumpkins fan, but their new album, Zeitgeist, is killer. The hidden gem on this album is the bonus track Stellar – what a fucking great track that is.
It’s your turn – tell me what music you’ve been shakin’ your groove thang to lately. And check out the newest question up at Ask Mama T!

I saw that most of Guns-n-Roses had become Velvet Revolver on Behind the Music.
I just can’t hang with you, when it comes to music. You are way more of a serious fan, than I am. I like music, don’t get me wrong. But I guess different music. Jazz? Blues? Folk? Country? No? Okay then. Never mind… lol
No, actually, I just don’t listen to much hard rock, even though I like it in small doses. But too much makes me feel like I am being attacked. Do I sound like your grandmother? I know.

I totally must be a nerd because I have never heard of any of those songs! :)

Jim Cuddy’s “The Light That Guides You Home” and as of its arrival in the mail today, the new Blue Rodeo CD “Small Miracles”. Meandering through the large Tori Amos library. Journey’s Greatest Hits (lol…ah yeah). Pink Martini. The East Village Opera Company.
Not surprised that people don’t know about the Kyuss/QOTSA thing, but kinda surprised you were surprised by GNR/VR. And it is a surprise any of them are alive… maybe they weren’t as hardcore as they let on? (that would be kinda disappointing)

p.s. until I read your post I always thought it was “lay down AND boogie…” which I thought sounded kinda hard to do… Thanks for clarifying!

You know I love all the music you sent my way. So I will check some of this out.
right now for me? Neko Case and Jean Leloup ( I lost my baby). Check it out…

Not that this comes as any surprise to me, but I think you and I would get along famously, at least while spinning some CDs (does anyone play CDs anymore?)
Lately, I find myself listening to a lot of System of a Down – they’re a bit harder than most of what you’ve listed, but surprisingly musical. Also, The White Stripes. And I’ve always been a Linkin Park fan, even if it makes people mock me.
But seriously, I’d give System of a Down a chance. If you’re interested, I can email you a couple MP3s to sample.

I’ve not heard of any of those bands, which is a good thing! I’m always looking for something new and different to add to my rotation, so I’ll definitely check out some of those.
I guess lately my tastes have been a little bit more mainstream. Nothing interesting enough to mention except Feist. I know, suddenly she’s all popular and stuff because of her Nano commercial, but I’ve actually been listening to her for about a year. I love the purity of her voice and the simplicity of her music.
And, dare I mention that I downloaded “Life in Cartoon Motion” the other day? I could help it. The “Big Girls, You Are Beautiful” song made me do it. It’s a catchy little album and it’s great to work out to.

I’ve got Arcade Fire’s “Cars and Telephones” on repeat over my way… I LOVE it! Though I think you can only download it; it was never released on an album, which kind of adds to hte appeal for me.

I’ve only heard of Arcade Fire and Smashing Pumpkins – I’ll have to do some listening when I get home.

The new Beasties totally kicks it. I’ve also been seriously digging the new Feist album.

I love Arcade Fire. I am currently obsessed with Okkervil River/The Stage Names. Super brainy lyrics with surprising melodies and a sexy-voiced frontman. Swoony.

Oh, I could go on and on about music, but no one ever wants to listen. I even offer free mp3’s on my blog…nothing. No interest whatsoever.
Anyway, even if no one cares I shall take this moment to ramble about music since I was prompted.
Kate Nash, System of a Down (as SciFi Dad mentioned), White Stripes, Great Lake Swimmers (Canadians like Arcade Fire), Bat for Lashes, Rilo Kiley, Gogol Bordello, Cat Power, Neko Case, and loads of others I can’t think of now.

I’m all into Massive Attack. Not new stuff, I’m just getting into it again. They did the theme song to “Sex in the City” and you’d never know it was them unless you listened to the whole track, which is awesome.

I’ve been listening to a lot of random stuff – at the moment opera! I have been on a nostalgia kick recently and listened to a lot of Hall and Oates and Billy Joel!

Check out The Acorn. If you’re digging Arcade Fire, listen to flood part 1 on the site. The new album (which is released today) is the story of the lead singer’s mother’s life, based on hours of interviews with her.

Thanks for the title of this post, now I’ve got THAT song stuck in my head. It’s erased all other music for the moment. I think I’m losing my mind too. Or, I’ve lost it already.

I’ll have to check out the new Beasties. Love love LOVE Mr. Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters – have to pick the new CD up tonight. When I get the bad headaches, give me Alice In Chains as loud as possible, please. Of course, Rage Against the Machine and Van Halen (or Van Hagar, I dont care, I LOVE Eddie) and Stevie Ray Vaughn and AC/DC and AeroSmith and Lenny Kravitz and Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, Zep – I’m just ecelectic. Got lots of CDs and my 13 yo listens to 3 Days Grace and the like. She can nail a Beasties song by the opening notes….she’s bad!

Recently begged for musical help on my blog and now really loving Feist, Teagan and Sara, Spoon, and the Teddybears. Also, Paul’s Boutique is my desert island disc of choice. Haven’t been able to get into the new album yet, but I’m guessing it needs a few listens before it clicks.

The song I am crazy obsessing over lately is Blue October, Calling You.
They are coming in Oct and I waaaaaaaaant to see them!!!
September 25th, 2007
Umm… not to be a total butt, *but* the Sex and the City theme song was written by a guy who probably wasn’t in Massive Attack…

One month! That would make you a good blogger. You just reminded me that, cough, cough, about a year ago I started my top 100 albums. I really must finish that.
I love your song selection. I’ve been listening to the new Foo Fighters. My daughters want Feist 24/7 nonstop because of the iPod commercial.
If you are in the mood for some high energy alterna-dance beats check out a Swedish band the Teddybears.

Great selection.
I happen to love Velvet Revolver and Guns.

I’ll do this tonight :] You know I love anything with music!

I have been listening to Papa Roach for the last little bit. My husband ran into the singer in an elevator a few months ago. The singer (I have no idea what his name is) asked my husband if he knew who he was. My husband had no idea, and when the singer told him, my husband said “Oh. I think my wife likes you guys”. I bet that made the guys day to be greeted with so little enthusiasm.

oh, wait, i have another.
damien rice. mmmm…LOVE him.
