Assorted tidbits

So I decided to kill my blogroll today – almost. Here’s the deal: after seeing those Google Reader sidebar thingies pop up on more and more of the blogs I read, I decided to look into it myself. I read this, and then this, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of having a ‘revolving blogroll’, if you will. So often, I read a post that I think is just fucking fantastic and I click away wishing I could tell more people about it – and now I can. I’m going to change it up regularly and keep it fresh and current, and I think it’s a really cool idea, yet there’s this part of me that is hesitant to ditch my blogroll and I don’t quite know why. I hardly ever use it myself and I’m terrible at updating it, and since it’s on a separate page on my blog I’m not sure if many people use it themselves. Yet I find myself hesitant to get rid of it, so it’s gonna stay, for now. (Special thanks to Nancy, who helped me figure out how the hell to get it on my blog in the first place…because when it comes to stuff like this I am a raving idiot.)

I took the kids to the Y today – I dropped Oliver off at the on-site daycare and Julia and I went swimming. We were in the change room getting ready when I glanced at her and noticed she was, uh, rubbing herself. I asked her what she was doing and she very matter-of-factly told me she was rubbing her vagina. Like, duh. I asked her why and she said, quite simply, “Because I like to. It feels good.” Oy. She’s three and a half.

Over at Petroville, MommaK’s having a Belly Hoppin’ baby shower for Lindsay, of Suburban Turmoil fame, who is pretty close to welcoming the latest addition to her family. She asked that we share a picture of ourselves during our most uncomfortable state of pregnancy. I’ve posted this picture once before here, but it highlights so nicely the raging stretch marks I got (that still haven’t disappeared) that I just had to post it again. This was taken around the end of April, 2003, and since Julia didn’t arrive until mid-June, I got much, much bigger, and much more uncomfortable than I was when that picture was taken. Good times!

  1. I’m FIRST!!! I am First–doing a little dance here. I have never been first to comment! What is really unfortunate is that I didn’t understand what the Hell a blogroll is at all. I have much research to do I guess.

I will comment on the vagina rubbing of Julia though! Ha fucking Ha!!! Have you tried to explain to her yet that she shouldn’t do that in public? At least you didn’t have to wait until you got a call from her Junior Kindergarten teacher telling you that Julia was “rubbing” herself during story time! Just wait until she’s a teenager…

  2. Glad I could help. I love having the sidebar with the posts I enjoy — I try to feature 5 new ones each day. As you know, my blogroll is gone for now (because Bloglines is what populated it, and I’ve since moved to Google Reader) but I’m trying to decide if I should put it back into place or not.

You know, I NEVER took any real belly shots (with my belly exposed) for either pregnancy. Now that I’m done having kids, I really regret that I don’t have those pictures.

  3. Awesome! Thank you. :) I can’t tell you how great it is to see all these other bellies and know I’m not alone.

  4. I did the same – only I created a blog just for my blog roll – SSSSSS because I had millions of blogrolls. I read the articles you linked to and more and decided I was more than just a link farm, I was, in fact, a PIG on a link farm. See me dig for truffles. Yum.

  5. Sounds like google reader is what all the cool kids are doing it. Once again I’m behind the times but will look into it for sure. Sounds cool.

  6. Man, I find it hard to keep up with the ever-changing world of blogging. I just figured out how to make my blogroll and do the linky-love thing, and now it’s passe. Sigh… I thought I might be too old for this.

  7. If she’s going to rub herself it’s time to introduce proper nomenclature — it’s her clit, not her vagina. Her future boyfriends will appreciate the distinction. :-)

    March 2nd, 2007

  8. …or girlfriends. Didn’t mean to be all heterosexist!

    March 2nd, 2007

  9. I love the google reader idea. Thanks for the shout out there!

Awesome. I need to figure it out.

    In my free time (LOL).

I’m sticking with the blogroll – picking posts to display would be too time-consuming for me. But I’m self-centered like that.

GC likes her parts, too. She’s 2.
I’m not buying her batteries until she’s at least 5, though.

  11. I’ve toyed around with the Google Reader idea. I accidentally deleted my blogroll a few weeks ago which I had moved to a separate page any way. And I may not put it back…HA! I’m daring like that!

Thanks for sharing the belly photo. :)

  12. i’m way too much of a notechmoronic to deal with the google thing, but it looks just beeutiful ’round these parts.

as for the pic – also beeutiful.

  13. I’ll have to check out that “kill the blogroll” idea… Thanks!

Julia. Yeah. You’re gonna have FUN. Lots of fun. :D

  14. I blogged for quite awhile before I even had a blogroll. Now I have it in order to remember where I need to go. It’s like my roadmap or something. I like the idea of the google reader. Wordpress has a top click feature that I’ve been using on my blog. It’s interesting to see what they are.

Stretch marks. Oh what fun. *not* ;)

    Have a great weekend!

  15. I’ve seen your name around other blogs I read and finally decided to stop in.

I’ve got three feeds like that setup over at my place. One is (like yours) recent posts that I want to highlight and point people to. The other two are automatic lists of recent posts to father blogs and mother blogs from a list I’ve compiled. It’s really easy to maintain all these with Google Reader.

As an aside, if you’re unhappy with the look of the links (you’ve got the “pink” default right now, if my memory serves), you can always set it to “no format” (or something similar) and then it will automatically adapt to your CSS style sheet (i.e. it’ll look like your other lists).

I have always *loved* that pictures…. It’s just incredible. I have a ‘thing’ for pregnancy photos, they are just amazing to me.

I like the idea of your ‘new’ idea. I think that would be great. The only thing or drawback that came to mind when you told me about it was how much upkeep and maintenance and time it might take…… You know?

    March 3rd, 2007

  17. For another propelling read about ditching the blogroll, try Chris Garrett’s short article. I practically did it on the spot after that one. The Google Reader replace is a great idea. Thanks for that.

Regarding the, um, vaginal rubbing – I love Haim Ginott’s positive view: “In actuality, there is a cause to rejoice that the child has progressed normally, so that her most pleasurable sensations now come from the genitals rather than from [any other orifice]“

  18. Well, I think you look beautiful, because nothing is as beautiful as a big ol’ pregnant belly!
Now i have to find a pic to post, and post it without my mom seeing what I am doing and finding out about my blog….LOL

I use my blog roll, but I have changed it here and there. And sometimes I want to take it down, so I don’t hurt anyones feelings…Maybe I will check out what you are doing if it works out for you.

As for J…Well. She’s right! It feels good, and it belongs to her, so. Smart kid. LOL. (I just tell Wyatt that it is a private thing.) And at least she’s not picking her nose in public.

    :)

  19. You figured it out – cool! I really love this. It helps me find new blogs.

And hey, thanks for the linky love!

    March 3rd, 2007

  20. For those people who have questions about maintenance of the “link roll” (highlighted posts via Google Reader) — I actually find it quite easy to maintain. As I’m reading through new posts each day via GR, I click to “share” posts I want to highlight, and that’s that! Each day when I add new posts I un-share ones from the previous day (though you could probably keep them longer, I just like having new ones each day). It really couldn’t be easier.

  21. I’m too damn lazy to try and screw around with my template. Or switch to Google reader when I just figured out Bloglines…

But I will enjoy your pretty new addition…

Love the pregnant belly. I just want to rub it…But I’m kinky that way.

Oh, and Fric, when she was three she used to rub her vagina up against the table legs, because “it felt good.”

Was great fun at family gatherings….

    March 3rd, 2007

  22. So I freakin’ love the story on Julia. ha ha ha.
Annnnnnnnd, I love doing template stuff but I do not know how wordpress works…AND, your belly was amazing. I love it! :]

    March 3rd, 2007

  23. Great pic!

And thanks for the google reader idea… I love the idea of the fave posts highlighted on the sidebar, and I’m gonna look into putting it on my blog… sometime.

    March 3rd, 2007

  24. I toyed around with Google reader (imported all my subscriptions from Bloglines), but it works like crap in Safari, so I ditched the idea for now. Maybe if I ever switch to Firefox I’ll look into it again.

    March 3rd, 2007

  25. That’s great. I had never heard of a revolving blogroll before; I live in a cave, I guess.

    March 3rd, 2007

  26. Joy

I like the idea of the “Good Readin’” section as opposed to blogroll–I might look into it myself. My roll is a beast, and it still doesn’t have everyone on it I’d like. And I love the idea of pointing people to great reads. (I am off to explore now)

    Your belly looks gorgeous!
Hope your toofs are feeling better. Mine are good.

    March 3rd, 2007

  27. this is a great idea – I love having a list of recommended reading. I cannot keep up with all of the good writers out there, so it’s nice to have a quick list to check out.

    March 3rd, 2007

  28. Isn’t there a way to keep mine on there at all times? :)

    March 3rd, 2007

  29. Am I the only person who refused to have any pictures taken of my belly? Sheesh. Look at all you glorious preggy people.

And we’ve started having a bit of self-rubbing just lately too, mostly at storytime. Which means ON MY LAP! Um, no thanks, that is not a private enough place for that activity, little lady. (I’m all about the response that it’s a private thing to do when she’s by herself. I’ve known kids to totally hump stuffed animals in front of company, and while I like to think I’m fairly open-minded about kids’ sexuality and such, that is a mite too much for me!)

  30. ooooooohhhh, looks like what anna sui’s interpretation of a pregnant belly would look like!

    March 4th, 2007

  31. Tulip…I have been out of the loop since Thursday when the storm knocked out our lines.

Soooo…Julia is having her tonsils out…what fun! Ice cream and stories and oodles of presents. I hope it works because she does get sick lots and that sounds like the key. Breath into it as best you can.

    Your belly is beautiful.

Oh and I killed my personal blogroll ages ago and am happy for it. I have it saved in my computer and it has given me a sort of freedom from shit I don’t know what. But it just felt right for me. Do what you must I say.

    March 4th, 2007

  32. Honey? That belly is a walk in the park compared to the way I was. I was a Buick! A fully-loaded tour bus! A parade float!

    But…I got over it.

    March 5th, 2007

  33. Look how tiny your arms are compared to your baby belly!

My arms got super fat. Blech.

    March 5th, 2007

  34. My cousin’s little girl started that up when she was about 2. They call it ‘diddling’ and now that she’s 4 they’ve managed to convince her that it’s an ‘alone in bed’ sort of thing.

    March 5th, 2007

  35. You must have drank a lot of beer to get a belly like that.

I like that Google thingamajiggy…I must have it.

    March 5th, 2007

  36. My daughter discovered it in the bathtub with the showerhead attachment – I have told her it is something to do in private.

Your belly looks like it is blooming – my sister took shots for me all through my pregnancy.

    March 5th, 2007

  37. That’s a great idea! I look forward to reading your recommendations.

    I love the belly picture!

I love looking at other people’s bellies. It’s almost like a fingerprint isn’t it? No two are ever alike.
